Mahindra U321 MPV (Innova Crysta Rival)

Mahindra U321 MPV (Innova Crysta Rival) India launch in Q1 2018; S201 (SsangYong Tivoli) compact SUV launch by end 2018 : The Mahindra U321 is expected to be powered by a new 1.6-litre diesel engine, while the S201 will get a new 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-charged petrol engine. Mahindra and Mahindra, India’s largest utility vehicle maker, is planning to launch two new models in the Indian market by the end of FY 2018. While the first of these two new cars is the all-new Mahindra U321 MPV, the other car is the Mahindra S201 compact SUV. Mr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director – Mahindra and Mahindra, had previously confirmed that the U321 MPV will be launched in India by the end of FY2017-18 (early 2018). Moreover, he also revealed that the Mahindra S201 compact SUV (Ssangyong Tivoli based) will be launched by end 2018 or early 2019.

The company plans to strengthen its market position in the utility vehicle segment in India as the company has recently lost some of its market share to Maruti Suzuki. Speaking about the upcoming car launches, Pawan Goenka, Managing Director – Mahindra and Mahindra, had revealed, “We have two products coming in the next two years. One is the U321 (code name) multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) which has been developed on the new global platform developed here in Detroit. It will come out this financial year.”

The new Mahindra U321 will compete against the Toyota Innova Crysta and the Tata Hexa. In fact, Mahindra is bench-marking the U321 MPV against the Innova Crysta as the car was recently spotted testing alongside the Innova Crysta. The car is expected to be powered by a new 1.6-litre diesel engine that will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Mr. Pawan Goenka further said, “Second one is S 201 which is based on SsangYong platform Tivoli. It will come out in the next financial year.” The Ssangyong Tivoli based Mahindra S201 compact SUV will compete against the likes of Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and the Honda BR-V. The company has also revealed that both these vehicles will first be launched in India, while the company might also consider launching these cars in International markets. Furthermore, when asked about electric vehicles, he said the company currently plans to establish four models from its current portfolio before launching an all-new electric product.

Mr. Goenka added, “Though we are investing in future projects, right now, the focus would be on these four products and generate some volume for us. A new product probably would come in about two years.” That said, Mahindra has a market share of 8 percent in the domestic market, while the company sells nearly 18,000 passenger vehicles per month in India. “Last couple of years, we have not grown market share, but similarly, we haven’t lost either. Clearly, every company will wish to grow its market share and for that, we need to ensure our current products continue to do well and bring in volumes,” Goenka added.
